The house black Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to The house black on Latako gatvė, you immediately get that this isn’t your typical four-star hotel. The building has this understated elegance that fits perfectly into Vilnius Old Town’s cobblestone charm — honestly, I almost walked past it because it blends so seamlessly with the historic architecture around it. There’s something refreshingly unpretentious about the place, which I actually appreciated after seeing so many hotels trying too hard to make a statement.
Location Magic
Here’s what you need to know about the location — it’s genuinely spectacular. You’re literally in the heart of everything that matters in Vilnius Old Town, and I mean everything. Cathedral Square is maybe a three-minute walk, Gediminas Tower is right there, and you can wander to Užupis (the quirky artist republic) in about ten minutes. What struck me most was how quiet Latako gatvė stays despite being so central — you get all the benefits of being in the thick of things without the constant tourist noise that plagues some other streets in the area.
The Room Experience
My room had this interesting mix of contemporary design with subtle nods to Lithuanian heritage — nothing too obvious or kitschy, just thoughtful touches that reminded you where you were. The space felt more intimate than grand, which worked well for the building’s character. I particularly liked how they handled the lighting; you know how some hotels either leave you squinting or sitting in a cave? They actually got it right here. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, and honestly, after a day of walking around Old Town’s uneven streets, that shower felt perfect.
Daily Rhythms
Mornings here have a nice rhythm to them — the restaurant area doesn’t feel rushed or overly formal, which I appreciated. You can actually sit with your coffee and plan your day without feeling like you’re being hurried along. The staff seems to understand that travelers need different things at different times; some want quick recommendations, others just want to be left alone with their maps. What I found particularly helpful was their genuine local knowledge — when I asked about avoiding crowds at popular spots, they gave me actual useful timing advice, not just generic tourist information.
Why Guests Love It
There’s a reason couples rate this location so highly — it’s got that perfect balance of being central enough to explore easily but tucked away enough to feel like you’ve discovered something special. You’re not fighting crowds every time you leave the hotel, but you can still walk to dinner, drinks, or sightseeing without needing transportation. The house black manages to feel both connected to Vilnius’s energy and removed from its chaos, which is honestly harder to achieve than it sounds. If you want to experience Old Town without feeling like you’re staying in a tourist bubble, this place gets the balance right.

Reviews of The house black
Good – Trudy from United States – August 1, 2025 (7/10)
The location is very good, being in the old town and a 20 minute walk from the bus station.
There’s a common kitchen with basic facilities.
What could be improved: I had a room with no window, as advertised, which would normally be fine. Problem is that the room is quite small and there's no mention that there is also absolutely no ventilation of any sort provided. Not a comfortable situation, on a warm day, or if you're claustrophobic. While present, I left the door a bit open, which seemed to help.Wonderful – Graulund from Denmark – June 10, 2025 (9/10)
Good price for so close to tourist area
What could be improved: Room 14 should really have some ventilation system , so there 8s no suffocation risk.Great stay in centre of town – Ed from United Kingdom – May 29, 2025 (8/10)

The location is amazing and the facilities are extremely clean
What could be improved: The bed was a little uncomfortableGood for 1-2 days staying, good location. – Tamara from Ukraine – December 15, 2024 (7/10)
The room was nice and clean. A woman from staff was so friendly and let me check in a bit earlier. The placement is perfect.
What could be improved: It was cold in the room, even though I turned on the hitting. Also shower was not really comfortable and cold. And rooms are not soundproof at all, so I heard everything ( but it’s not a hostel problem, it is a problem with people who think they can be loud at 3 am).Good for night stay – Eugene from Belarus – September 25, 2024 (9/10)
It's very silent and cosy place, good enough for a night stay. Toilet and shower, towels, tea.
It was my first time of self check-in so I was confused how to get in. But they have free WiFi and after 1 minute of searching I found message how to check-in on my email.:)Good – Vojtěch from Czech Republic – September 10, 2024 (7/10)
Nice, clean and tidy..
What could be improved: Thin wallsGood – Ramona from Latvia – July 28, 2024 (7/10)
The location is very convenient
What could be improved: No windows in the room and no air conditioning. There was a fan in the room, however, it makes lots of noise when is being left on for the night
