Islandijos Self Check-In Basement Apartments Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Islandijos Self Check-In Basement Apartments on a quiet cobblestone street in Vilnius Old Town, you might wonder if you’ve got the right address. The building looks like any other historic townhouse until you realize that’s exactly the point — you’re staying in what feels like a local’s place rather than a typical tourist hotel. The self check-in process is surprisingly smooth, though I’ll admit it felt a bit odd at first not having someone greet me at reception. Once you get your key and head down to the basement level, the space opens up more than you’d expect.

Location & Old Town Charm

Honestly, the location is what makes this place shine. You’re literally steps from Cathedral Square and can walk to pretty much everything worth seeing in Vilnius without breaking a sweat. I mean, when locals tell you a place has an excellent location score, they’re not kidding around. The narrow street itself (Islandijos gatvė) connects you directly to the main tourist areas, but it’s quiet enough that you won’t hear crowds of people walking by at night. What I really appreciated was being able to grab coffee at a local café just around the corner — the kind of spot where you’ll see more Lithuanians than tourists.

The Apartment Experience

The apartment itself feels more spacious than typical hotel rooms, which makes sense given this four-star property’s setup. You get a proper living area along with your bedroom, and there’s actually a small kitchen area that’s useful for storing snacks or making morning coffee. The basement location might sound concerning, but the windows are positioned well enough that it doesn’t feel dungeon-like. The furnishings are modern and clean, though not particularly fancy — think IKEA meets boutique hotel rather than anything too luxurious.

Practical Considerations

The self check-in system works well once you get used to it, but I’d recommend having your phone charged and the property’s contact info handy just in case. There’s no traditional front desk service, so if something goes wrong with your room or you need local recommendations, you’ll be dealing with phone support rather than face-to-face help. The building is historic, which means charming but also means you might hear your neighbors more than you would in a modern hotel. Parking isn’t included, but honestly, you won’t need a car in this part of town anyway.

Why Guests Love It

Couples seem to really enjoy the privacy and independence this setup offers — you can come and go as you please without dealing with hotel staff, and the apartment style gives you more space to spread out than a typical hotel room. The Old Town location means you can walk to dinner, explore the medieval streets, and still feel like you’re staying somewhere authentically Lithuanian rather than in a generic tourist hotel. For the price point, you’re getting a solid base in one of the best possible locations, even if the service model isn’t for everyone.

Reviews of Islandijos Self Check-In Basement Apartments

  • Top location, great check-in. Would definitely stay again. – Michael from United Kingdom – October 1, 2024 (7/10)

Amazing location. Great contactless check-in. Spacious apartment. Big double bed and big sofa. Sleeps 2 people. No windows, so gets pitch black, good for a lay-in.

What could be improved: Shower tray isn’t good. Water doesn’t drain away well, so quickly floods the room.

  • Pleasant – Aurelija from United Kingdom – September 27, 2024 (6/10)

We liked location and easy check in/out

What could be improved: The apartments are in the basement, with no windows and a very strange smell. We rented rooms for four days but couldn't stay there more than 3 days because we were depressed. There are nightclubs around and it's very noisy when sleeping at night. Honestly I would't recommend if you want peace.

  • Happy afterall – Domantas from Lithuania – September 8, 2024 (8/10)

    Good location, comfortable bed.

What could be improved: The shower drain is not working properly. The entire floor in the restroom was flooded after a 5 minute shower. Also the AC did not seem to work, it was producing hot air instead.

  • It was a disaster and I strongly condemn the agent – Mervyn from South Africa – August 2, 2024 (1/10)

    Nothing

What could be improved: 1.No access to the agent
2.washing machine made clothes smell really bad
    3. 2 towels for 10 days
    4. No change of linen
    5. No cleaning service offered
7 Noise from neighbours at 4 in the morning
    8. No place to dry washing
    9. Moved to Novotel hotel and demand a refund for 4 days.
    I0. It was a disaster

  • Not worth it. No natural light. Only on a strict budget. – Marina from Spain – June 12, 2024 (2/10)

    – WiFi, never failed and strong.
    – Location city center near main bar and restaurant area, with no noise from the busy public street
    – Bed is big and the room is spacious
    – Entrance process "feels" safe, as there are 3 security processes to get to the room. However, it's in a dark downstairs basement and the buildings main doors is not always kept closed.

What could be improved: It's a dark and humid basement with water pipes right inside the room, which make noise (You can't see the pipes and the tiny street level window in the picture because of the angle, they are behind the photographer)

    1) No natural light at all, you dont know how the day is until you walk outside. Minimum ventilation through a old underground window at street level, bugs come through.

    2) The toilet and basin were dirty on arrival. Requested a cleaning staff to come the next day, which they did. No bin in the bathroom. Only one in the kitchen.

    3) The wardrobe also dirty. Could only hang clothes, did not use the shelves. Being street level you can notice the room gets dusty fast.

    4) Shower is on the other side of the room, separate small room. Water temperature decent, water pressure low.

    5) Kitchen was equipped with the bear minimum, a pot and pan, old and not safe to use. Water heater was old and white with calcium did not touch. No microwave.

    6) No AC, however as it was humid and cold I used the portable radiator (which was broken) to dry the space.

    7) Bed is big but you can feel each spring. Soft pillows.

    8) Space under door let's the sound and light in. Had respectful neighbours which made it ok

    9) They do not have luggage storage. Check out is at 11am, if you want to enjoy the day you need to find a solution. There are no public storage places near the apartment or in the city center.

Do not recommend unless last resort or strict budget. Worth spending a little more or staying a little further away from the center for a more comfort, natural light and hygienic option.

  • Poor – Χαρδαλουπα from Greece – April 8, 2024 (3/10)

    The location was excellent

What could be improved: The floor sink was damaged and siding work. The water was flooded and this made our vacations difficult. Also, some spots in the room were dirty

  • All very good – Dennis from Poland – April 3, 2024 (10/10)

    Very good

What could be improved: Great location

  • Very Good – Mydory85 from Georgia – February 28, 2024 (8/10)

Lacation it's best!! Around many bars and cofe

What could be improved: As ot basement and no windows was quite uncomfortable

  • Top Location! – Pablo from Italy – February 26, 2024 (10/10)

Central location, clean apartment. Checkin was completely automated with remote assistance from the customer care. They provide you codes to enter the building and the apartment via email.

  • Very good location but the apartment itself had many minuses – Rokas from Lithuania – February 18, 2024 (4/10)

The best thing was the location of the apartments – it's right next to the center of Vilnius, and everything could be reached on foot. No car was needed at all.

What could be improved: Right from the beginning, we received the wrong check-in information – we could not get into the apartment for at least 30-40 mins. To get the right check-in info, we had to call multiple times to the same number and ask for the same information. After getting in, we saw that the tables and the countertop were dusty, so we cleaned it ourselves. The toilet was also not cleaned properly.
There was no central heating – the electric heater mounted to the wall was not working, so we had to use the two additional ones. One of the additional heaters had a questionable dyi project made on the wire (it seemed that there were two different wires connected to one) thus the wire itself got very hot when we used the heater. We have refrained from using it at all. The bathroom was also very cold, there was no place to dry wet towels
Lastly, since the apartment is located in the basement, we could hear cars driving on the street, including over a metal manhole cover which made a loud clanking noise that could be heard all over the apartment. Also, whenever people outside the bars had any banter between themselves, we could hear the arguing and sometimes even screaming.
