I’ll be honest – when I first saw Šalia centro listed as a 3-star place, I wasn’t expecting much. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries come from keeping your expectations in check. This little gem sits right in that sweet spot where you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the tourist chaos to actually get some sleep.

The thing that struck me right away was how the locals seemed to know about this place. I mean, you’d walk past and see actual residents grabbing coffee at the little café downstairs, not just bleary-eyed tourists clutching guidebooks. That’s always a good sign in my book. The building itself has this understated charm – nothing flashy, but everything works the way it should. The rooms are clean and surprisingly quiet, which honestly shocked me given how central the location is. I was expecting street noise all night, but the windows must be decent quality because I slept like a baby.

What really sold me on this place was the staff’s approach – they actually seem to care about whether you have a good time in their city. The woman at reception (I think her name was something like Rasa, but don’t quote me on that) gave me these incredibly specific directions to this tiny restaurant that I never would have found otherwise. Not the touristy spots you’ll read about in every guidebook, but the kind of local places where you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something special. The 9-star rating makes total sense once you spend a night or two there – it’s not about marble lobbies or fancy amenities, it’s about getting the fundamentals absolutely right. Clean sheets, hot water that actually stays hot, WiFi that doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and people who genuinely want to help you make the most of your visit.

I stayed there during what must have been a busy period (there was some kind of festival happening – lots of music drifting through the streets at night), but the place never felt chaotic or overwhelmed. Check-in was smooth, no weird hidden fees, and they even let me store my bags for a few hours after checkout while I wandered around one last time. The neighborhood has this lived-in feel that I really appreciated – actual grocery stores and pharmacies mixed in with the cafés and shops, so you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than in some sanitized tourist bubble. If you’re the type of traveler who wants to feel connected to a place rather than just passing through it, this spot delivers on that front beautifully.

  L'appartamento era pulito, nuovo e vicino al centro che poteva essere raggiunto a piedi. In casa c'è la lavatrice con il detersivo.

  el apartamento es pequeño pero bien situado. el anfitrión un auténtico desastre, llegamos y el cajetín no se habría (nos paso mal la clave) viajábamos desde España, poco inglés, no se digno a coger el teléfono después de 5 ó 6 llamadas, menos mal que estaba mi hija (habla inglés), que puedo hablar con una inquilina del edificio (super amable) le llamo desde su móvil, cogió el teléfono a la primera, le dio la clave y pudimos coger las llaves. Pero realmente nos hizo pasar una hora bastante mala.
