I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Fortuna Hostel on Liepkalnio Street, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The building sits in this quiet residential pocket of Rasos, and you know what? That ended up being exactly what made it special. It’s one of those places that doesn’t fit into neat categories – technically a hostel but feels more like staying at your artsy friend’s renovated apartment building.

The whole vibe is refreshingly unpretentious. You won’t find marble lobbies or uniformed staff here, but what you will find is character in every corner. The common areas have this lived-in warmth that actually makes you want to hang out rather than just pass through. I mean, there are vintage books scattered around, mismatched furniture that somehow works perfectly together, and windows that let in this gorgeous natural light during the day. The staff – well, they’re more like helpful locals than hotel employees, and they genuinely seem to care about making sure you experience Vilnius properly, not just survive your stay.

Location-wise, you’re about a 15-minute walk from Old Town, which honestly works in your favor. Rasos is where actual Vilnius residents live, so you’ll stumble across neighborhood cafes and small shops that tourists usually miss entirely. Plus, parking isn’t the nightmare it can be closer to the city center – something your rental car will thank you for. The area gets beautifully quiet in the evenings (though you might hear some tram sounds if you’re a really light sleeper). I actually found myself taking different routes back from the old town each night just to explore the tree-lined streets around the hostel. There’s something almost village-like about this part of the city, despite being so close to everything.

Now, let’s be real about what you’re getting – this isn’t luxury accommodation, and it doesn’t pretend to be. The 7.6 rating probably reflects the fact that some travelers expect more traditional hotel amenities. But if you’re the type who values authenticity over thread count, you’ll probably love it here. The rooms are clean and functional, with enough personality to feel special without being gimmicky. Check-in was surprisingly smooth, and they were flexible about letting me store my luggage early since I’d arrived on one of those ungodly morning flights.

What really sold me was how the place manages to feel both social and peaceful. You can chat with fellow travelers in the common kitchen if you’re in the mood, or retreat to quieter corners when you need space. It’s that rare spot where solo travelers don’t feel awkward and groups don’t feel cramped. During my stay in late spring, there was this nice mix of backpackers, digital nomads, and a few couples who’d clearly chosen the place specifically for its character rather than its star rating – or lack thereof.

  Lovely room, comfortable single bed. Nice staff, cheap coffee. Heritage building close to railway and bus stations. Very clean bathroom, big kitchen. Excellent for a short stay.
  
  What could be improved: The shower! It was either freezing cold or boiling hot and the shower head did not fit on the wall (wrong size) No bed lights.
